I live overseas and am in the process of applying for a working visa. Can I still apply?
In most cases you must be an Australian citizen or hold permanent resident status to be considered for a position. However, in some circumstances where there is a skill shortage within the Australian labour market, consideration will be given to offering 457 business visa sponsorships to attract suitable qualified professionals to work for GEO.
I am an Enrolled Nurse wanting to become a Registered Nurse. Would GEO support my professional development aspirations?
Yes - GEO is committed to providing professional development opportunities and as such has a robust sponsored learning policy. Once employed, seek out and assess yourself against the policy to determine eligibility.
Will I have opportunities to "act up" into more senior roles?
Yes - for those seeking additional responsibilities, GEO will provide opportunities to act in more senior roles. These opportunities will be discussed and agreed upon with individual managers and will be integrated into individual professional development plans.
How safe is it working with GEO?
At GEO - safety, security and risk minimisation is our number one priority. We equip all staff with appropriate training prior to commencing employment, with annual refresher and other professional development training being completed thereafter.
We use safety procedures approved by the States in which we operate, supported by state-of-the-art technology. All circumstances where staff interact with prisoners is governed by appropriate protocols and is subject to monitoring.
Can I transfer from one location to another?
You will initially work at the facility you have been successful in gaining employment with. Later, should vacancies or other opportunities arise within GEO you may apply for these.
Will I be required to travel?
There may be the odd occasion where travel may be required. In such cases we will provide you with as much notice as possible.
Further, in such instances all your work related travel and out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with company policies and procedures.
Can females work in a male prison?
Yes. Male and female staff are employed to work in all prisons. GEO subscribes to equal employment opportunities, encouraging female candidates to apply for all roles advertised.
Can I work a second job while working at GEO?
In most cases yes, providing that there is no conflict of interest and no risk to health and safety. In all cases, you will need to declare any secondary employment prior to commencing such employment.
I have worked in corrections previously will I be subject to a probation period?
Yes. All new employees, even those who have worked for GEO in the past, will be subject to probationary period.
Will my criminal record prevent me from gaining employment with GEO?
Not necessarily.
We expect – of course - all candidates to be totally upfront and honest and make all such disclosures at the time of application for employment. Failure to disclose is likely to jeopardise your chances of employment and therefore we strongly advise early and complete disclosure.
On average how long does the employment and selection process take?
This varies from position to position, however as a general rule of thumb from the time of placement of the job vacancy it can take anywhere from one to four months.
I have applied for a role with GEO previously. Do I need to reapply or can I just ask for my previous application to be put forward?
You should reapply. Each recruitment campaign is completely independent of previous campaigns.
I currently work for the public service. Do I have to complete the entire recruitment and selection process?
Yes. You will need to complete the entire selection process, as staff cannot transfer their employment directly to GEO from the public service (or from other private correctional providers). Your application will be assessed in the same way as all other applicants.
If I am unsuccessful with my application, will you provide me with feedback?
Unfortunately we are unable to provide you with detailed feedback. You should assess your suitability against the selection criteria advertised for a particular position you wish to apply for.
If I need to relocate to take up employment with GEO, who will pay for my relocation?
Relocation is at the expense of the applicant, unless stipulated within the job advertisement or negotiated as part of your employment package.
Does GEO offer flexible working hours?
Yes. GEO will try to accommodate any requests for flexible working hours providing that this does not affect operating requirements.
Are all positions full-time?
No. GEO is a highly flexible employer and we recognise and respect the range of personal circumstances our employees have.
We employ individuals on a full-time, part-time and casual basis, and many of our team enjoy the benefits of switching between these at varying stages of their lives and in response to circumstances.
