A Day in the Life
As a Correctional Officer, I monitor, supervise, interact with and support prisoners as they work towards their rehabilitation goals. A typical day for me involves:
Over the last 10 years I have found myself working in a variety of positions including Intelligence Officer, K9 (dog) Handler, Centre Emergency Response Team member, Classification and Case Management Coordinator, Wing/Unit Officer and Training Officer.
GEO requires me to do shift work, working from a 24hr rostering system. This is great for me and my family as I am able to balance my personal obligations with greater flexibility.
While the prisoners are at times unpredictable and the behaviours encountered continually change, what I am certain to encounter each and every day is a close knit team of fellow officers who support me in my daily activities. The spirit of camaraderie that I’ve developed with staff is extremely special, and it is this spirit that helps me through the more challenging circumstances.
